Grandma's  Gardening Lessons for Millennial's - Part 2


A tiny little Seed, has so much to teach us
It goes through sun, rain, storms, chills, falls but patiently it takes up everything and grows into a plant and then, into a mighty tree bearing sweetest fruits and flowers.

Isn't it the process of growing a plant just wow ? ?
Keep reading through to know about various plants grown by my Grandma, and all the lessons she has taught me about gardening.

The thought about writing on this topic was simply adding some great value about nature and it's offerings, into millennial readers lives. Because we have power to mend and heal our planet Earth.

Here are some gardening lessons part 2:-


1:- Fig - Anjeer


Fig is also called as Anjeer in India. It is one of the earliest fruit grown by man. It is very popular fruit in India consumed in two ways, fresh and in dried form. 
There are 800 varieties of figs grown. 
Figs are grown twice in a year May - June and December - January
Utmost care has to be taken of fig plant and it is a challenging job to nurture this plant.
Fig fruit has velvety greenish or royal purple color skin. Ripe fig has shelf life of 4 days. Right way to store figs is in cool dry place, best in refrigerator. Dry figs can be are available all year. It is one of the best fruit to keep your heart healthy.

2:- Indian Sherbet Berry - Phalsa berries



This one is a typically native Indian berry some also like to call it as black current berry. Cool name, with really cool taste used in making squashes and juices. There are two seasons to plant these one in February to March and another in July - August. It takes 4-5 months for a seed to turn into a plant. It is purple in colour and may change to black when ripes. The liquid from Phalsa trees bark is used in purifying sugar and jaggery. The Phalsa fruit is perishable in nature has to be consumed soon.

3:- Papaya 


Papaya is a tropical fruit. Best part about Papaya tree is it bears fruits within 8 months. Papaya fruit is available throughout the year. Both raw and ripe fruit can be consumed. It is very unique plant it can be grown at anytime of the year.

4:- Fenugreek - Methi


Methi or fenugreek is a winter plant. It grows in cool climate but requires good amount of sunlight. Seeds are sown in October month it takes 45-60 days for a plant to grow. One of the important thing about this plant is green leaves are to be plucked before turning yellow. Dried Fenugreek leaves known as Kasuri Methi can stored and consumed for 1-2 years.

5:- Pomegranate - Dadim


Pomegranate is a shrub which grows into a 5-8 meter height. It blooms bright red flowers which turns into fruit. Even seeds in dry and fresh form are edible, most of it's use can be seen in Indian Cuisine. The tree can survive for several years. But it takes 5-6 years for a seed to grow into a tree. There are so many health benefits of pomegranate fruit. The fruit can be stored throughout the year by freezing it. 

6:- Amaranth Leaves - Rajgira Plant Leaves



Amaranth called as Rajgira leaves are also known as God's Grain.
Amaranth is just like any other leafy vegetable. But it has very unique brown color leaves can be consumed as salad, stir fry in soups or pesto sauce and in many ways. Amaranth leaves are offered to Lord Shiva in month of Shravana. It acts as cooling agent into body. Grows in Winters till start of Summers.

7:- Aloevera Plant


Aloevera has numerous health benefits. It's uses are so diverse. As medicines, cosmetics etc. This plant can be grown indoors into pots. All you need is one small root or an aloevera leaf, provided with good amount of sunlight it grows very fast and keeps multiplying. Within a year one root can multiply into six aloevera plants. This plant requires less water to grow. Watering can be done alternate days.

8:- Holy Basil plant - Tulsi 


Every Indian household has at least one Tulsi plant, it is considered as holy and sacred. It is very easy to grow tusli or basil plant either in a garden or indoor into a pot all it requires is sunlight and water. It needs no extra care and it is fuss free. There are 5 different types of Tulsi or Holy Basil plant. After sowing seed it takes 15 - 21 days to grow into a plant and has life span of 3 years. Best months to grow this plnat is April to June. Do you know holy basil or tusli topping on your pizzas and pastas makes it ten times yummier. :- P
